I was introduced to upland bird hunting by my dad in the mid-70’s as I carried a Red Ryder BB gun as we pursued quail and pheasants in Indiana behind our Brittany, Nellie. Those early days afield with my dad ignited my passion for upland bird hunting and my dad and I hunted the Great Lakes and Plains for a variety of species. There is nothing more exciting than walking in on a nice point and seeing the bird(s) explode off the ground. Then more times than not in the woods that look from your dog saying, “really you missed again!”
My career brought me to Michigan roughly 30 years ago and I have been chasing grouse and woodcock every fall with and an annual western bird trip to either Nebraska or South Dakota. I primarily hunt alone or with my son. As much as I enjoy hunting with my son or just by myself, I truly enjoy meeting and sharing time with other fellow upland hunters. Every trip I learn something new from our conversations and experiences and hope you will as well. It is very rewarding to see the shear enjoyment hunters show when flushing and harvesting a bird.
Our stable of dogs are young but field tested. The leader of our pack is a Bella, a 11-year-old Brittany. This will be Bella’s 12th hunting season, she as a strong passion for hunting with boundless energy. River, she is an 8-year-old English Setter, she has been on and off the injured reserve list and will be having knee surgery in 2025. Hoping her rehab goes well and she is back in the hunt this fall. Remi is a 3-year-old Brittany and is becoming a very fine hunter, she had a good 2024 season both in the woods and in Nebraska and South Dakota. Lastly, we have added another dog to the pack, Vera is a French Brittany puppy, and this fall will be her first-year hunting.
Give me a shout if you would like to experience a Northern Michigan bird hunt, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
I am licensed through the State of Michigan.
